The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) has intensified efforts to build climate resilience in Bayelsa State by promoting climate-smart agriculture, forest restoration and community-led conservation initiatives in three riverine communities.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting on “Catalysing Local Action for Climate Justice in Nigeria” in Yenagoa on Friday, the Foundation’s Climate Change Lead, Mr Shittu Usman, said the initiative was helping vulnerable communities adapt to the growing impacts of climate change while improving livelihoods and protecting biodiversity.

The leadership of the Labour Party in Bayelsa State has dismissed claims that Miss Helen Ajoku defected to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with a large number of women, describing the development as inconsequential.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the National Deputy Women Leader, Mrs Enu Timipre, the party said Ajoku’s assertions that she left with “thousands of women” were false and misleading.

The Bayelsa State Government says it is repositioning the state’s economy as a preferred destination for investors and tourists through sustained economic diversification.

The Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Mrs Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, stated this at the weekend during a transparency briefing held at the Bayelsa Treasury Building in Yenagoa.

She explained that the state is diversifying into agriculture, the marine and blue economy, marine transport, aviation and tourism as part of efforts to broaden its economic base.

Tragedy struck on Friday when an 18-seater bus conveying passengers to the burial of the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor was involved in a fatal crash along the Toru-Orua axis of the Sagbama/Ekeremor Road.

Eyewitnesses initially claimed that many lives were lost in the accident, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to hospitals for treatment.

However, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Seiyefs Brisibe, who confirmed the incident during a telephone conversation with our correspondent, said only two victims died at the scene.

Bayelsa State government has inaugurated its own airline following the successful flight of one of its newly acquired aircraft on Wednesday, November 26, 2025 — a milestone Governor Douye Diri described as “historic” for the state’s aviation future.

The ATR-72/600 aircraft, one of the two procured by the state government, departed the domestic wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 9:30 am with about 50 passengers and crew on board, including Governor Diri. It landed at the Bayelsa International Airport to cheers from residents and dignitaries.
