The trial of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Adoza Bello, continued on Friday, 30 January 2026, before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja, with a prosecution witness testifying that deposits from Kogi State local governments were paid into multiple private bank accounts in a structured manner to evade regulatory reporting.
The seventh prosecution witness (PW7), Olomotane Egoro, a compliance officer with Access Bank Plc, told the court that the transactions were deliberately broken into amounts below the reporting threshold to avoid Currency Transaction Reports (CTR) to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).
Head, Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, in a statement on Friday, said Bello is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 19-count charge bordering on money laundering involving the sum of ₦80,246,470,088.88.
The Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned one Ndubuisi Iheukwumere John before Justice Agbaje Olufunmilola Adetutu of the Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, over an alleged ₦150 million fraud.
According to the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, in a statement issued on Friday, 30 January 2026, the defendant was arraigned on Monday, 26 January 2026, on a two-count charge bordering on advance fee fraud and obtaining money by false pretence.
One of the charges alleged that Ndubuisi Iheukwumere John conspired with Emmanuel Emifoniye and Salt Adaeze Udoka, both currently at large, in November 2024 in Asaba, Delta State, to commit the offence of obtaining by false pretence, contrary to Section 8(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.
Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL) has constructed 13 new office blocks for the Nigerian Army’s 3 Battalion at Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
The private petroleum pipeline surveillance firm also remodelled 22 existing offices within Sector 1 facilities at the same Effurun Barracks.
Inaugurating the twin projects, the Managing Director of Tantita, Chief Kestin Pondi, said sustainable security could not be delivered by a single institution working in isolation.
Tragedy struck on Friday when an 18-seater bus conveying passengers to the burial of the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor was involved in a fatal crash along the Toru-Orua axis of the Sagbama/Ekeremor Road.
Eyewitnesses initially claimed that many lives were lost in the accident, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to hospitals for treatment.
However, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Seiyefs Brisibe, who confirmed the incident during a telephone conversation with our correspondent, said only two victims died at the scene.
A sermon by Pastor Yinka Yusuf has been circulating widely on social media, provoking outrage in some quarters and deep reflection in others. In the sermon, the cleric spoke about Akwa Ibom children who ought to be in school but are instead trapped in menial domestic work. He also highlighted a culture of infighting, pull-him-down tendencies, excessive pride, and a mindset that celebrates proximity to power rather than productivity. Pastor Yusuf attributed these setbacks to ancestral influences that, in his view, require spiritual intervention, which he said informed the controversial crusade planned for Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital. While many were quick to attack the messenger, a few paused to interrogate the message itself.
A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan has nullified the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on 15 November 2025.
In its ruling, the court barred members of the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) from parading themselves as national officers of the party.
The court further held that the Caretaker Committee led by Mohammed Abdulrahman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the only recognised National Working Committee of the PDP, pending the conduct of a valid national convention.
It will be recalled that Tanimu Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, emerged as the PDP National Chairman after a tense and highly controversial national convention in Ibadan.

According to the Command, the operation took place on 23 January 2026 at about 11:00 p.m., when operatives on routine stop-and-search patrol along the Calabar–Itu Highway intercepted a commercial bus with registration number ARR 600 ZY, travelling towards Calabar.
A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a carton containing 415 live cartridges. The bus was driven by one Ikenna, with several passengers on board.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, permission to travel to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to perform the lesser hajj (Umrah) and observe the final 10 days of Ramadan, despite his ongoing trial.
Justice Emeka Nwite granted the application on Thursday after Bello’s counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN), moved a motion seeking the temporary release of his client’s international passport.
Daudu informed the court that the application, dated 19 January, was filed on 20 January. He said the motion sought an order allowing Bello to travel to Mecca for the lesser hajj during Ramadan, which runs from 18 February to 19 March, and to observe the concluding days of the fasting period in the holy city.
Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), did not oppose the application.
The National Association of Seadogs (NAS), Pyrates Confraternity, Atlantic Shores Deck, Eket Chapter, has called for the urgent decentralisation of Nigeria’s security architecture to enable states to establish and manage their own policing structures.
The President of the association, Cap’n Idongesit Ifon, made the call in a statement issued to journalists on Thursday in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
According to Ifon, Nigeria’s highly centralised policing framework has become inadequate for addressing local security challenges across communities.
The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) has challenged the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa in a suit contesting Shell UK PLC’s divestment from its onshore and shallow-water oil and gas assets.
The plaintiffs allege that the divestment did not comply with the guidelines stipulated in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.
The suit was filed by the traditional ruler of Ekpetiama Kingdom in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, King Bubaraiye Dakolo. He is also seeking redress and environmental remediation over what he described as 40 years of cumulative pollution in his domain.

The incident happened on January 20, 2026, around 11:30 pm., when operatives of the command, during a routine night patrol along the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium area in Uyo, responded swiftly to a distress call from a Bolt driver, whose name was withheld.
The driver reported that his Toyota Corolla had been forcefully taken from him at gunpoint.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, who spoke on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, Baba Mohammed Azare, said that upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered that the suspects had already fled with the vehicle.

Naijapunchnews reports that Falana said the latest disclosure contradicts the military’s earlier position and amounts to misleading the Nigerian public.
The senior advocate spoke on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday, following the military’s announcement on Monday that some of its personnel would face a military judicial panel over alleged coup-related activities.
In October 2025, the Defence Headquarters announced the arrest of 16 officers for alleged violations of service regulations but denied reports of a coup plot, insisting that the cancellation of the 2025 Independence Day parade was unrelated to any such allegations.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu briefly missed a step and stumbled on Tuesday in Ankara, Turkey, during an official state reception.
The incident occurred as the Nigerian leader walked alongside his Turkish counterpart, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, while joining the guard of honour. It momentarily drew attention but did not disrupt the programme, which continued as scheduled.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 38-year-old man, Blessing Ime Abel, of Ikot Akpa Ntuen Village in Ukanafun Local Government Area, for alleged unlawful possession of a firearm, threat to life, and possession of suspected illicit substances.
The arrest followed a complaint lodged by a male resident, identified as Emekpo, who reported a case of threatening violence.
Acting swiftly on the report, police operatives were deployed to the area and apprehended the suspect. A search conducted during the arrest led to the recovery of one locally made pistol, one live cartridge, and substances suspected to be illicit drugs.
