The Akwa Ibom State High Court has sentenced a police corporal, Mbazigwe Chinedu Friday, and a bus conductor, Isaac Eddy Ndeesor, to death by hanging for the kidnapping of Elder Akara Johnson Mendie, Vice Principal of Community Secondary School, Nkek, in Ukanafun Local Government Area.

Delivering judgment in Uyo, Nsemeke Daniel found the two men guilty of conspiracy, kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms.

DSP Timfon John, Police Public Relations Officer, on Wednesday, 25 February 2026, said upon being directed to stop, one of the passengers, who had a black handbag strapped around his neck, suddenly alighted and fled in an attempt to evade arrest.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has dismantled suspected drug hideouts in Itu Local Government Area, arresting 18 suspects and recovering a large quantity of substances believed to be cannabis and other illicit drugs.

The operation was carried out on February 22, 2026, at about 11:20 pm, following credible intelligence that some locations in Oku Iboko Village and Mbak Community had become active drug distribution hubs linked to criminal activities in the area.

DSP Timfon John, Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Command, said that the police, acting on the information, carried out a coordinated midnight raid on the identified locations.

A Federal High Court in Uyo has sentenced 30-year-old Nkereuwem Felix Effiong to life imprisonment for his role in the abduction of a judge of the Akwa Ibom State High Court, Hon. Justice Joy Unwana.

Effiong was convicted on three of four counts, including conspiracy, membership of a terrorist group, and kidnapping under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Justice Unwana was kidnapped on December 18, 2023, alongside her driver, Idorenyin Ekanem, along the Okobo–Esuk Inwang–Ndon Ebom Road in Akwa Ibom State. They were held captive for five days. During the attack, the judge’s police orderly, ThankGod Ekanem, was shot dead.

The Akwa Ibom State Government has dismissed media reports suggesting that its 76 oil wells have been ceded to Cross River State.

The government maintained that the draft report by a Federal Government Inter-Agency Committee to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) does not amount to a reallocation of oil wells.
