As the world commemorates World Cancer Day, the Albinism Association of Nigeria (AAN) has called for urgent, inclusive and sustained action to address the disproportionate burden of skin cancer among persons with albinism (PWAs) in the country.

The National President of AAN, Dr Bisi Bamishe, made the call on Wednesday, emphasising the heightened vulnerability of persons with albinism to skin cancer due to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, commemorates the signing of the Charter of Paris Against Cancer at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris, France, in 2000. The 2026 commemoration carries the theme “United by Unique,” as part of the 2025–2027 global campaign.

Aisha Muhammed, daughter of Nigeria’s late Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, has said her father’s unassuming lifestyle and leadership approach made him vulnerable and ultimately contributed to his assassination.

Aisha, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, made the remarks on Monday during an appearance on ARISE News, as she reflected on her father’s legacy 50 years after his death.

She said the late military leader’s commitment to accountability, responsibility and discipline remains central to his enduring influence in Nigeria’s political history.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has appealed to the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to reschedule its planned protest slated for Tuesday, February 3, 2026, citing concerns over public safety and security.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the command said intelligence reports indicated that some proscribed groups were planning to infiltrate and hijack the protest.

According to the statement, the police are aware of the planned peaceful protest by the NLC FCT Council scheduled to hold within the Federal Capital Territory.

Unyenge, a community in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, states that it is closely monitoring the ongoing negotiations between the Ekid Union and Ibeno over the ownership of the Stubbs Creek Forest.

The controversy, according to community leaders, was reignited by the Ekid Union’s renewed push to assert dominance and control over the forest, which spans four local government areas: Mbo, Ibeno, Esit Eket and Eket.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Zonal Directorate 1, on Tuesday arraigned Sarumi Samusudeen Babafemi before the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, over an alleged N206 million fraud.

Babafemi was arraigned alongside his companies—606 Autos Limited, 606 Music Limited, and Splash Off Entertainment Limited—before Justice Rahman Oshodi on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, concealment and transfer of proceeds of crime, contrary to Section 332(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, and punishable under Section 332(3) of the same law.

The Ibeno Clan Council has dismissed claims made by the Ekid People’s Union (EPU) before the Akwa Ibom State Land Use Allocation Committee, describing them as distorted, misleading and capable of threatening peace, lawful governance and investor confidence in the state.

Speaking through its spokesman, Chief Udofia Okon Udofia, the council said the EPU’s presentation at the committee’s sitting in Uyo on January 16, 2025, was founded on what it termed historical revisionism, misinterpretation of the law and inflammatory threats against government authorities and legitimate investors.
