Governor Umo Eno has announced plans to introduce rural allowances for doctors posted to underserved communities in Akwa Ibom State, saying the payments will be tied to monthly performance and attendance evaluations.
The governor disclosed this during the commissioning of a modern Primary Health Centre Operational Base in Oron Local Government Area, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the state.
The Akwa Ibom State Government has successfully resolved the altercation between operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), leading to the suspension of the strike earlier embarked upon by health sector unions in the state.
The resolution was reached at the end of a joint stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Akwa Ibom State Government on Friday, 15 May 2026, at the Old EXCO Chambers, Governor’s Office, Uyo.

More than 2,000 indigent patients have been billed to receive free medical and surgical care during a humanitarian outreach organised by the Ibesikpo Asutan Organisation California Incorporated.
The weeklong medical mission, which kicked off at ImaBridge Africa Medical Centre, Ibesikpo, Akwa Ibom State, aims to meet the health needs of residents who cannot afford treatment. About 135 patients have already been booked for surgeries.

A German court on Wednesday ordered a life jail sentence to a palliative care nurse for the murder of 10 patients and attempted murder of 27 others with lethal injections.
The court in the western city of Aachen found the 44-year-old man guilty of the offences committed between December 2023 and May 2024 in a hospital in Würselen near Aachen.
The court also determined that the offences carried a “particular severity of guilt” which should bar him from early release after 15 years, normally an option in such cases.
